Present - isc verbs
This was mostly a "make sure the basics are actually solid" pass, but there's one wrinkle in the regular verbs worth flagging: not all -ire verbs conjugate the same way. There's a subgroup that inserts -isc- before the ending in the io, tu, lui/lei, and loro forms. So finire (to finish) goes finisco, finisci, finisce, finiamo, finite, finiscono — the noi and voi forms stay "plain" but the rest get the -isc- stuck in the middle. Capire, preferire, and pulire all work the same way. There's no visual cue in the infinitive that tells you which -ire verbs do this — it's just something you learn verb by verb.
Beyond that, the usual suspects are irregular across the board and don't follow either pattern cleanly:
- essere (to be): sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono
- avere (to have): ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno
- fare (to do/make): faccio, fai, fa, facciamo, fate, fanno
- andare (to go): vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno
- venire (to come): vengo, vieni, viene, veniamo, venite, vengono
- dire (to say): dico, dici, dice, diciamo, dite, dicono
- dovere (must/have to): devo, devi, deve, dobbiamo, dovete, devono
- potere (can/to be able to): posso, puoi, può, possiamo, potete, possono
- volere (to want): voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono
- uscire (to go out): esco, esci, esce, usciamo, uscite, escono
The pattern I keep noticing across dovere/potere/volere is that they all share the same shape: irregular io/tu/lui/loro forms, but noi and voi stay regular (dobbiamo/dovete, possiamo/potete, vogliamo/volete). Once that clicked it made the whole group much less intimidating.
